Hoof abscesses are more likely in winter due to prolonged wet weather making the sole of the foot softer, therefore making it easier for foreign objects or dirt to enter the foot.
Hoof abscesses are commonly caused by dirt or gravel penetrating the white line (weakest area on the sole of the foot) or when a sharp object, such as a nail from a loose shoe, penetrates the hoof sole.
Infection then rapidly develops with a build-up of pus within the confines of the hoof, which is extremely painful for the horse. Abscess treatment needs to commence quickly to halt the abscess finding its own exit point.

Products for Hoof Poulticing
To treat an abscess, horse owners may need to apply a hot, wet poultice, so there are a few essential products that every first aid kit should include for an effective poultice.
- A licensed poultice such as Animalintex®, which contains two key ingredients; Boric Acid which acts as an antiseptic minimising infection and re-infection and promotes healing, and Tragacanth, a natural poulticing agent, which, when it reacts with water, helps draw out infection allowing the wound to heal.
- Veterinary Gamgee® to use as padding on top of the Animalintex®.
- A cohesive bandage such as Equiwrap® to hold everything in place.
When treating an abscess, the poultice should be changed every eight hours for the first 48 hours.
Animalintex® is sold as a 41cm x 21cm dressing, which can be cut to the size and shape needed, or in packs containing convenient hoof shaped dressings.

Advantages of Animalintex® Hoof Dressings
- Easier and quicker to prepare, with no need to cut the dressing to shape.
- The pre-cut hoof shaped pad is more economical as there is no waste.
- Easier to apply and handle, especially when wet.
- Provides a more convenient shape to hold in place when securing with a cohesive bandage.
